Nicola (Babyface) Adams of Great Britain made history on the 9th of August 2012 at the London Olympics as she became the first woman ever to win an Olympics Gold medal in boxing. Her gold medal was won in the 51kg (flyweight) category, beating World’s number one Cancan Ren of The People’s Republic of China by 16 points to 7.

Nicola Adams outpunched her Chinese opponent in all 4 rounds to coast home to an emphatic victory. At round 1 she led by 4 points against Ren’s 2, having a 2 point lead. She maintained her focus and fought gallantly all through the four rounds without a losing any round to her opponent.

On resuming round 2, she extended her lead to 5 points, leading by 9 points to 4. She just was too smart for Ren who tried to catch up with her. She kept frustrating her with smartness, accuracy of punches and hitting the targets.

Round 3 was not different. Instead of closing the gap, Ren saw herself falling apart. The gap extended once more to 8 points. This time, Adams was leading by 14 points to 6. And it was becoming clearly Cancan Ren may never win the fight anymore, except she could only knock down Nicola, which by the standard of the latter, was impossible mission to accomplish.

Nicola Adams threw accurate punches on her opponent, evading her opponent’s punches as well. By the 3rd round, Ren was already losing all hopes and was also getting tired. But she just kept on to the end, even though she knew she was not going to be able to win the fight anymore.

On round 4, the game was already over for Cancan Ren. By this time, all Adams needed was just do some jabbing, run around the ring and wait for the final bell to ring. When the bell was rung, there was no doubt as to where the pendulum was swinging. Even the winner and the history maker already knew herself by this time.

Earlier at the weekend, Nicola Adams wrote in the Observer, concerning Cancan Ren, “I beat her earlier this year but she got the better of me in the world championships final in China in May. But it was close and the judges might just have been swayed by her home crowd cheering every time she threw a punch.

What makes her so good? I think we think alike. We're both thinking fighters. It's always a game of chess. We're both trying to make each other make mistakes and capitalise and gain points. She hasn't got much power but she's really fast and accurate when she throws a punch. But if we do meet again, I'm hoping that 10,000 screaming British fans will help push things in my favour.”

Adams had earlier on the 6th of August beaten Stoyka Petrova of Bulgaria by 16 points to 7. She went further on 8th to defeat Chungneijang Mery Kom Hmangte of India in the Semi finals by 11 points to 6.

By this feat, Nicola Adams became the first woman in Olympics history to win a boxing gold medal. We salute your courage and your achievements Adams; and we wish you the best in your boxing career.
