In a country dominated by leagues like the NFL, it's tough for lacrosse to earn their spot on network TV. The NFL was the most watched “show” of any genre last fall. You need to watch Lacrosse … That's a lot to compete with, but it doesn't mean that there aren't ways to watch. Until the sport finally makes its way to networks like NBC and FOX, here are some ways to watch lacrosse games on TV:
ESPN U
ESPN is definitely on board with the madness. And while Lacrosse isn't yet making headlines on the two prime channels, your one stop for all lacrosse coverage and news is ESPN U. Different television packages vary on whether or not they offer ESPN U alongside basic channels, but if they don't, ESPN still has you covered.
ESPN 3
ESPN 3 is actually a website — not a TV station — so this is a great alternative if you don't have cable. ESPN 3 has live scores, rankings and news coverage — both collegiate and professional — and SportsCenter-style highlights from previous games. If you have an Xbox 360, you can even watch on your TV and avoid being stuck behind your laptop for an entire game.
Time Warner Cable SportsNet
Time Warner Cable SportsNet is now in HD on select channels. If you have no problem with paying for niche sporting networks, then there are a few that frequently air collegiate and professional lacrosse. The bonus: With TWC you can use your cable subscription to log in to their site and watch online if you're away from the TV (like waiting around at the airport).
NBC Sports Network
The Ivy League and the NBC Sports Group announced the first-ever rights for the NBC Sports Network to televise men's lacrosse games, Insidelacrosse.com reported. And since major team sports like football and basketball already have TV contracts with the “world-wide leader in sports,” that leaves NBC with space to fill. Lacrosse has certainly found its place on the network, just as it did with TWC.
iLacrosse
iLacrosse is perfect for all lacrosse scores, rankings and news. However, this option does eliminate live coverage. The advantage of this over other online venues like ESPN 3 is that you can search for footage as far back as you'd like, whereas ESPN might only show you the most recent highlights. Someday, we'll get our chance to watch primetime network lacrosse, but that time just isn't here yet. At the rate this sport is growing, we won't have to be so creative with our access to these games. But for now, these choices will be all you need to catch all the action.
