It was completely
unbelievable as Bayern Munich of Germany humiliated four time UEFA champions FC
Barcelona, out of the 2013 UEFA Champions’ League on Tuesday night at camp Nou.
It was a night Barcelona players and their supporters would never love to
remember in their lives.
The Munich players came
to Camp Nou with a 4 goal advantage, having beaten Barca 4-0 in Germany a week
earlier. The magic boys had hoped to upturn the table back in Spain; but how
they intended to do that without their talisman, Lionel Messi, remained a pipe
dream. It turned out eventually that Barcelona suffered their worst Champions
league defeat ever by losing another 3-0 to Munich, thereby making it a 7-0
aggregate in favour of the Germans.
Lionel Messi watched
with disbelief from the bench as Barca were torn to shreds. Messi has been down
with a hamstring injury for some weeks and only managed to play in the second
half of the match against PSG at Camp NOU in the second leg of the quarter
finals. So, playing without him made Barcelona much uncoordinated, and without
bite for the whole of the 90 minutes of play. The first half ended in a barren
draw with the Germans looking more purposeful in front of goal.
The night saw the
Germans contesting every chance with the Spaniards, making sure they were not
allowed any space to do their usual tip-tap. First goal of the night came
through Arjen Robben, who was allowed an opportunity to do his usual turn to
settle down to take his left footer that beat Valdes completely hands
down.
Barcelona needed to
score 5 unreplied goals to survive into the final, but after the first goal by
Robben in the 48th minute, their woes were compounded as they had to
score 6 goals to be able to progress. The pressure on Barca increased, which
led to Gerard Pique scoring an own goal in the 72nd minute as he
tried to clear off a goal bound pull out from the left flank. That own goal
erased the little hope that was left for the Spanish team.
Thomas Muller sealed
Barca’s fate with a third goal in the 76th minute, which saw him
equaling Lionel Messi’s Champions league goals for 2013 campaign. The Munich
players made the Spaniards look ordinary in front of their fans. Nobody ever
imagined Barcelona could concede such scandalous number of goals in a
semi-final match. The question on everyone’s lips now is, could this be the
beginning of the end of Barcelona’s reign? Does it mean a new soccer king is
emerging in Europe? Who is going to be next king, Munich or Dortmund? One thing
is sure – the 2013 UEFA Champions’ League final in Wembley is going to be an
all German affairs.
Tito Vilanova knew it
was all over and had to withdraw Andrei Iniesta and Xavi in the second half
when there are no other serious matches to play before the end of the current
season. Barcelona have done relatively great in their various competitions over
the years, but losing by a 7-0 aggregate to Munich is a dent on their
record.
